ABE - Adult Basic Education

Basic Information

For Whom:

Students who register for Adult Basic Education are those who have already achieved competency in English as a New Language.

Registration:

Students take the TABE (Test for Adult Basic Education) for placement and later in the semester to track progress in reading and math.

Some participants may wish to prepare for the High School Equivalency Exam after they reach an advanced level of competency on the TABE.

Curriculum

Reading

Classes in reading focus on vocabulary building, sentence understanding & summarizing.

DAILY SESSION: 3 HOURS

DURATION: Full Semester

Math

Classes in math focus on numbers, problem solving, algebra, geometry, and data.

DAILY SESSION: 3 HOURS

Writing

Writing focuses on sentence construction, grammar, spelling accuracy, and writing.

DAILY SESSION: 3 HOURS

- Formal writing

Classes run Monday - Friday. Total: 15 hours per week across Reading, Math, and Writing.

Computer Lab Access

All students may use the computer lab to access supplemental materials across all subjects and to develop essential computer skills.

Importance:

Access to computers gives our students the chance to develop essential skills and practice using technology, opening doors to new opportunities.

Community Workshops

Throughout the year, students can attend workshops on topics such as financial literacy, personal and family health, fire safety, and current immigration issues.

Community workshops give our students the knowledge they need to empower them to make informed decisions and stand their ground with confidence.
