About Sisters of St. Joseph

Uniting All in God's Love

The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650 in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, by six women inspired by the spiritual guidance of Jesuit priest Jean-Pierre Médaille. Rooted in a deep commitment to serve God and neighbor, their mission quickly grew beyond borders.

Since they arrived in 1856, the Sisters of St. Joseph have faithfully served the people of Long Island and beyond, responding with compassion and creativity to the needs of the times. Over the years, their ministries have reached far beyond New York - to Puerto Rico, Appalachia, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic -embodying a spirit of unity and service wherever they are called.
